The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine

イエロー・サブマリン [DVD]

"The Beatles' Yellow Submarine" (1968 UK Directed by George Dunning) 86min.

Psychedelic KIMOKAWA film
Author: Koshino J."unko"

A bit crazy animation made in psychedelic era (drug culture age), featuring psychedelic art, black humor and the Beatles music. I actually do not like the Beatles, but I think some of their works in the late 1960's are really awesome; "A Day in the Life", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "I am the Walrus", "Eleanor Rigby", "Here, There and Everywhere", "Across the Universe" and so on. The characters (creatures) in the film are kind of creepy and cute at the same time ("KIMOKAWA" in Japanese). Jeremy, a scholar-like furry animal, is such a cute guy, who has nowhere to go just like us. He is nowhere in this world, but is still everywhere among us. On the other hand, the human characters, I mean the Beatles, are really creepy. Especially Ringo (an apple?) is quite abnormal because black and white is all reversed in his eyes!! It really creeps lol. As for English, I found it a little difficult for non-natives to watch it without English subtitles, though it may be effective for English study if you watch and listen it carefully. The most regrettable thing is that the "real" Beatles appeared at the end of the film, which has spoiled the whole movie. I do not recommend this to everyone because it is too unique and strange. But I enjoyed it as a whole :o) ★1/2
